James Rieck – Emotional Support exhibition at Lyons Wier Gallery, NY addresses and celebrates the relationship between people and pets.
Rieck uses 1960s fashion, department store advertising, over saturated hues, unusual cropping and bold patterned backgrounds in his compositions. By directing you to the animal’s eyes not the human, the artist invites you to consider the complex and compelling bond between both subjects begging the question “who’s supporting who and/or what?” As a pet owner himself Rieck conveys the fixation people have with pets made even more true with the numerous pictures and videos of pets posted on social media.
