Unlights

Robert Irwin’s gorgeous exhibition Unlights at Pace Gallery, New York featuring colorful six-foot long fluorescent bulbs. They are filled with theatrical gels mounted on long white electrical fixtures, but those canisters contain no wires, and the bulbs are never turned on, thus the name of the exhibition Unlights. Irwin is one of the founding masters of California’s Light and Space movement concerned with how geometric shapes and use of light could affect the environment and perception of the viewer with the artist as one of the artist most associated with the term. At 91 years old the artist unfortunately says that this exhibition may be his swan song, let’s hope not.
