Design Miami returned to Pride Park in December with its biggest edition to date – more than 80 exhibitors gathered under the curatorial theme “Make. Believe.”. It was the perfect rallying cry for a city with an uninhibited disposition, and where design is part of its aesthetics. Visitors to the 20th anniversary of the fair were greeted by Katie Stout’s mirror filled carousel, you could take a spin atop a mermaid, a walrus, a seagull, or a host of other marine animals. Mathieu Lehanneur’s personalized aluminum chairs formed from initials and green sofa with matching cushion tote for storing errant remotes (as seen in Salon New York recently) were among the noted exhibitions. These and other entries explored the boundaries between technical prowess and wild imagination within the framework of Make. Believe. The theme invited designers to blur the line between the possible and impossible, reality and fantasy, how it is now and how it could be. This forward-looking experiment at Design Miami featured many brilliant one-of-a-kind pieces that explored the ongoing brilliance of imagination.
